Fake coin pair sent to prison

TWO men who sold fake World Expo commemorative coins were sent to prison yesterday, the Changning District People's Court announced.

The two, surnamed Lu and Han, received jail terms of up to four and a half years and were fined 80,000 yuan (US$12,040) and 50,000 yuan respectively.

In February, Lu and Han, both born in the 1990s, started selling bogus coins commemorating the Expo and the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. They were joined by two accomplices, the court said.

They sold 24 sets of the Expo commemorative silver and gold coins in two months, plus three sets of coins marking National Day.

Police seized another 10 sets of Expo coins from their apartment in Minhang District in April. They were all counterfeit. Genuine coins would have been worth more than 170,000 yuan.

Their alleged accomplices will be tried separately.
