Fake courier gets year in prison

A FORMER deliveryman was sentenced to one year in prison for fraud for posing as a courier and taking electronic products worth more than 20,000 yuan (US$3,147) from clients, the Zhabei District People's Court said Friday.

The convict, named Yu Huafu, also was fined 10,000 yuan.

Prosecutors said Yu, an Anhui Province native, was a former employee of S.F. Express Co, a major courier service provider in China.

The man was fired last year and did not return his work clothes to the company, the court heard.

Yu, however, collected goods from at least five clients in an electronic products mall on Qiujiang Road on January 21. The goods included an iPad, a digital recorder, a laptop and 750 USB flash disks, the court heard.

Yu claimed he collected the goods on behalf of a friend, also a deliveryman, and all the goods had been stolen when he went to the toilet. Yu was detained by police the next day, the court heard.

Officials said residents should call the courier company rather than the deliveryman if possessions go missing.
