Fake earth mover sold
A MAN has been arrested in connection with selling a fake Caterpillar Inc earth mover to a Kenyan customer for US$68,000, Minhang District prosecutors said. The Kenyan, who was preparing to open a construction company in his hometown and wanted to buy equipment, searched online late last year and found a company in Shanghai selling earth movers.
He contacted a man surnamed Huang and they agreed on a deal for a digger said to have been be produced by Caterpillar in 2001. Huang then renovated an old earth mover made by another company, valued at about 170,000 yuan, and labeled it with fake Caterpillar branding, before selling it to the Kenyan. The customer paid part of the money, promising the rest when he received the vehicle. However, Huang was later held by police. According to procuratorate, Huang was involved in counterfeiting a registered trademark.
