Family loses appeal for payout
THE family of a man who died last year while fleeing from the police has lost its appeal for compensation.
The victim, surnamed Yin, drowned after jumping into a river in the Pudong New Area after running from a gambling den in the Pudong New Area that had been raided by police.
His relatives claimed that the officers pursuing him should have done more to help after he got into difficulty in the river. They filed a lawsuit seeking 1.9 million yuan (US$306,000) in compensation, but lost their case.
The family appealed, but the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court yesterday ruled against them.
The court dismissed claims that the police officers had not tried to rescue Yin, saying there was evidence to show they jumped into the river after him and also called an ambulance.
