Family of dead cyclist get payout

A LEARNER driver who was given a suspended prison sentence last year for knocking down and killing a cyclist has been ordered to pay 813,000 yuan (US$131,000) in compensation to the dead woman’s family, the Changning District People’s Court said yesterday.

The 28-year-old, surnamed Chen, was having her first lesson with boyfriend, surnamed Wang, when she knocked down the 42-year-old victim last year. The court also ordered Wang to pay 406,000 yuan compensation, and his insurance company 110,000 yuan.

The accident happened as Wang and Chen were returning from a night out in a rental car. Chen was detained by police and later sentenced to 18 months in prison with a two-year reprieve.

The victim’s family later filed a civil suit against demanding compensation of more than 950,000 yuan.
