Family stresses led to mom abandoning baby
A YOUNG mother abandoned her baby at Hongqiao Railway Station as her boyfriend seemed reluctant to marry her and her family had disowned her, police said yesterday.
But overcome with remorse, the 22-year-old, surnamed Shan, from Suzhou in Jiangsu Province, returned to the station after about 90 minutes only to find the 5-month-old boy gone.
Police had heard the child crying and found him at a corner of a cargo elevator, in the incident on Sunday.
And when Shan went to report her child missing, police were caring for the baby while checking surveillance camera footage for the mother.
After initially claiming to have left the child while going to a restroom, Shan admitted to police that she had abandoned her son.
Officers said the former college student told them she had been shunned by her family after she became pregnant.
She lived with her boyfriend’s family, and while they were kind to her, he was dragging his heels about marriage.
Her boyfriend and his parents came to Shanghai to take Shan and the child home.
The baby’s father said the wedding would take place as soon as possible.
