Family wins US$245,000 in civil suit
THE family of a woman who was electrocuted while taking a shower at her home has been awarded 1.6 million yuan (US$245,000) in compensation, the Pudong New Area People’s Court said yesterday.
The victim, a mother of a young boy identified only by her surname Wang, died due to a power surge to the water heater in her bathroom, which was caused by an electrical leak from a neighboring apartment, the court heard.
In response to the incident, which happened in August 2014, the dead woman’s family filed lawsuits against Wang’s landlord, her neighbor, the maker of the water heater, the property management firm and the local power company.
The court ruled that the electricity supplier was mostly to blame for Wang’s death and ordered it to cover 40 percent of the compensation. The property management firm, neighbor and landlord were ordered to pay, 30, 20 and 10 percent, respectively.
