Farmers鈥 incomes jump 10 percent

THE per capita income of Shanghai’s rural residents jumped 10 percent last year from a year earlier, to 25,520 yuan (US$3,700), the government said.
The increase was larger than that of urban residents, indicating a narrowing income gap.
A key measure to improve farmers’ earnings were reforms to the property system in rural areas, allowing registration of the ownership of collective properties and ensuring the protection of the interests of each member.
In Minhang District, 116,800 members of local collectives earned an average 3,764 yuan in dividends each.
“We will also further improve professional training for local farmers, to increase their incomes,” said Shi Guanghui, the city’s deputy mayor, adding local governments would encourage young people who have left seeking work to return to their hometowns and use their new experience to help modernize farming.
