鈥楩atal hit-and-run driver planned to speed鈥
A DRIVER suspected of being involved in a fatal hit-and-run incident in Baoshan District was held by police early on Saturday.
The 23-year-old, surnamed Mao, is said to have told police that he took off his license plates beforehand as he planned to drive fast and wanted to avoid detection.
He is suspected of causing a fatal accident near the junction of Youyi and Tieshan roads at 9pm last Tuesday.
No details of the victim were released.
In an interview with Xinmin Evening News after he was detained, Mao is said to have admitted driving his Volkswagen Santana 2000 at more than 80 kilometers an hour in wet conditions.
Mao is reported to have said that he had taken off the plates before he took to the road as he planned to speed.
In the interview, Mao is said to have admitted striking a passer-by on his left just after he had been looking in his passenger side wing mirror.
Mao told the newspaper that he hesitated “for one second” before deciding to flee because he was terrified.
As he fled, Mao reached 120 kilometers an hour on Yixian Elevated Road, according to the report.
Police said they managed to identify the driver through surveillance camera records.
Mao was held at his home in Yangpu District just after midnight on Saturday. If found guilty, he could face more than seven years in prison.
