Father found 28 years after leaving family

A senior citizen from Zhejiang Province has been reunited with his family after 28 years — thanks to Shanghai police riding to the rescue.

They found the man surnamed Yu on a tourist bus did not possess an identity card when the bus stopped at the police check station at Fengjing, suburban Jinshan District, on Tuesday afternoon.

Yu told police he was from Taizhou city. He had left home when he was about 40 years old to seek better financial opportunities to help his family, but instead he had run into repeated misfortunes, leaving him destitute. As a result he felt more and more reluctant to return to his family.

Police said they had found Yu’s information from the database of people whose household registration had been canceled, and then managed to get into contact with his son.

Yu’s son told police the family had reported his father missing and had looked for him in Zhejiang and Shanghai, but with no joy.

Together with other family members, Yu’s daughter, who was 13 when she lost contact with her father, arrived in Shanghai later on Tuesday to meet her father.

At the emotional reunion, the family expressed their thanks to the police.
