Fears for children after cats shot
RESIDENTS in a Huangpu District community popular with expats say they fear for their children’s safety as a gunman has been taking pot shots there.
This comes after two stray cats were found with what residents say look like air gun pellet wounds.
Police said they could not confirm that an air gun was used in the incident at The Bund Side community on Zixia Road.
Air guns are illegal in China.
A resident, surnamed Lau, said yesterday that there are many families living in the community and they are extremely concerned that their kids could be injured.
“Of course every parent is going to be worried if they know that someone in the community has a gun,” Lau told Shanghai Daily at the complex yesterday. “It’s especially concerning now as the weather is now cooler for kids to play outside.”
A friend of Lau’s, who asked not to be named, told Shanghai Daily that many expat families live there.
Police said they have not determined what weapon was used.
“We can’t rule out the possibility that it’s a slingshot or something else with the same force,” an officer with Huangpu police told Shanghai Daily.
Lau and a neighbor, surnamed Wang, found an injured cat on August 27.
“The bullet entered his body then smashed the spine and came out from the other side,” Wang said.
Following surgery, it is in a stable condition but may be paralyzed, said Wang.
Then last Friday, another stray, bleeding heavily, was found in the community. It later died.
“This has happened before, and last year a pellet hole was found in the window of a 16th floor flat,” said Lau.
