‘Female police officer’ held over online scam

A man accused of masquerading as a female police officer online in order to cheat two would-be suitors out of more than 16,000 yuan (US$2,600) has been detained in the northeast China city of Tianjin, Jiading District police said yesterday.

The 46-year-old suspect, surnamed Huang, used images he found online of an actual Jiading police officer and assumed her personality to cheat his lovelorn victims via the QQ instant messaging service, they said.

The case came to light in January when one of the victims, neither of whom was named, contacted Jiading police to check the woman’s credentials.

The man claimed he had lost contact with the mystery woman after transferring 8,000 yuan to her bank account.

Police used the financial information to trace Huang to Tianjin, where he was detained by local officers on March 19.
