Ferris wheel to be shining star over holidays

SEVERAL events will be held in Jing’an District to celebrate Christmas, the New Year and other “holidays,” the local government said yesterday.

The highlight will be a 50-meter-diameter “Sky Ring” Ferris wheel on the roof of the Joy City shopping mall on Xizang Road N, which opens on Saturday, it said in a press release.

Other events — to be held before the Lantern Festival on February 22 — include New Year countdowns, art exhibitions, a concert and a fun run.

A local police officer said different safety plans will be put in place for each event. He did not elaborate.

New Year countdowns will be held on December 31 at the Jing’an Kerry Center, Plaza 66 and Daning Commercial Plaza. Bells will be struck at the Jing’an and Baohua temples on the same day.

A concert featuring “pop stars from South Korea” will be held at the Daning plaza, the press release said.

A 4.2-kilometer fun run — from Jing’an Park to Shanghai Railway Station — will be held on January 1.

The Reel shopping mall will stage an exhibition of about 100 paintings by Spanish artist Joan Miro (1893-1983) over the New Year holiday, while 40 paintings by French impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919) will be on show at the Shanghai Exhibition Center until March 6.
