Ferry service fails to find its sea legs
A FERRY service introduced in December to carry passengers along the Huangpu River will be discontinued on April 1 due to a lack of public support.
The city’s transport commission said yesterday that the service, which was designed to reduce traffic congestion in the Bund and Lujiazui areas, had failed to catch people’s imagination.
In the three months since its launch, the service made 684 trips, but the average number of passengers was just eight, it said.
The ferry boats had capacity for about 500 people per trip, but over the course of the trial period just 5,648 passengers climbed aboard, it said.
The service was not cost-effective and a decision was taken to terminate it, the commission said.
