Ferry service makes its final crossing

A FERRY service that once carried thousands of passengers a day across Yuanchixie Creek in Songjiang District made its final voyage over the weekend after more than 200 years of service.
Fewer than 100 people were aboard the Dongsandu ferry that sailed to Dongxia from Wushe on Saturday, a fraction of the number that once bustled to get aboard.
“At its peak, the ferry would carry about 2,000 passengers a day, but that’s been steadily falling for years,” said Shen Jinshun, the boat’s captain for the past decade.
“Even though the service has been upgraded and improved, it’s just not popular anymore,” he said.
The death knell for the service came last year with the opening of the Chenta Road Bridge, which crosses the creek just 2 kilometers from the ferry terminal, Yu Yongfeng, director of the urban construction in Shihudang Town, told Shanghai Daily.
“When the bridge opened, the number of ferry passengers dropped sharply,” he said, adding that a second road and pedestrian bridge is under development and should be completed next year.
Shen and his crew of five will be offered new jobs in the district, or they can take the option to retire, Yu said.
