Fines for drivers who don’t update info
SIXTEEN bus and truck drivers have been fined 200 yuan (US$30) each since last month for failing to update their personal contact information with police, authorities said yesterday.
Shanghai traffic police embarked on a month-long campaign to update bus and truck drivers’ registration data in an effort to better manage drivers of such vehicles.
Police warn that without updating their contact details, drivers could miss important reminders about annual drivers’ license inspections and license renewals.
Dai Yi, a vehicle management officer with the Shanghai traffic police, said some drivers were found using another person’s contact information during registration, while others left invalid phone numbers.
“We try to contact those who only left addresses, but sometimes those addresses are also invalid,” she said, adding that police have managed to update over 1 million items of drivers’ information in recent years.
Dai said transportation companies which fail to update records on their drivers will also be held responsible.
As a new measure, traffic officers can also now update drivers’ contact information on their hand-held devices, police said.
