Fire drill to test Metro readiness
A fire drill will be carried out in Metro Line 2’s East Xujing Station today to test the city’s emergency responses to a fire on the crowded and busy Metro network, the city’s fire department said yesterday.
This will also be the first fire drill in an open Metro station crowded with regular commuters, to make the test more realistic.
To minimize its effects on ordinary passengers, the drill will be after the morning rush and the station selected is also a terminal station, where is lower traffic because it is the end of the line.
Other passengers will be warned of the exercise before the train being used pulls into the station.
A total of 300 local residents and 400 firefighters will participate in the drill, with 36 fire trucks, another 20 vehicles for emergency coordination and two helicopters.
The exercise will simulate a passenger’s power bank catching on fire on a train heading for the station, the authority said. The fire will create heavy smoke.
Passengers will call the fire emergency number for help and use extinguishers. The driver will also calm passengers via the train’s broadcast system and the train will be evacuated .
