Fire in department store

AN outdoor neon advertising billboard on the landmark New World Department Store in People’s Square caught fire around 7pm yesterday, fire authorities said yesterday.
The fire was put off in 15 minutes and no one was injured.
The flames did not damage the interior part of the popular store, the Shanghai Fire Control Bureau said in a statement.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
“I could see the smoke from about a hundred meters away,” said Ji Guzhen, who lives nearby and was walking on East Nanjing Road with her husband after dinner.
“The fire was very big and burning objects kept falling from the neon-lit board.”
A shop assistant told Shanghai Daily that her colleagues had called 119 as soon as the fire started. The management department had told them to cut off electricity immediately.
