Fires in 2 university buildings
TWO buildings on separate campuses of Shanghai University caught fire in the early hours of yesterday morning.
There were no casualties and the causes of the blazes are under investigation, said the fire department.
A fire broke out about 3:40am in a six-story dormitory building at the Shanghai University campus in Baoshan District.
It started in a sitting room shared by three dormitory rooms on the fifth floor, said the university.
Students living there tried to tackle the flames themselves and alerted the emergency services.
Fire crews extinguished blaze within 20 minutes, without it spreading to other rooms.
Fifteen students on the sixth floor and four on the fifth floor were rescued after being trapped by the flames, said the fire department.
Other students escaped the building before firefighters arrived, said a witness, adding that many people had been awake and watching the World Cup when the fire started.
Earlier, a fire had broken out at the university’s Yanchang campus.
About 1am, patrols saw the second floor of South Tower — an empty 1930s wood and brick office building — was ablaze.
Firefighters deployed 15 fire trucks, extinguishing the fire 90 minutes later.
The building was badly damaged in the blaze, with its roof destroyed.
