Firework festival attendance cut
ATTENDANCE at the Shanghai International Music Fireworks Festival has been cut by more than 8,400 for safety reasons, officials said yesterday.
A total of 25,000 people will be permitted for each of the three shows starting at the end of the month at Century Park in the Pudong New Area.
Safety measures at public events have come under close scrutiny since the crush on the Bund on New Year’s Eve, in which 36 people died and 49 were injured.
Three fireworks shows will feature six displays presented by teams from China, the United Kingdom, Canada, Austria, Germany and Spain.
Events will be staged on the evenings of September 30, October 3 and October 6, with two displays each night.
In total, there will be 6,000 fewer tickets for standing and 2,430 with seating compared to last year, said Li Zhengming of the Pudong New Area Commission of Commerce.
This means a 1 million yuan (US$161,300) reduction in sales revenue, added the official.
Additional safety measures are also being taken.
Extra security staff and infrared detectors will be deployed to prevent people with no tickets from trying to scale fences.
And a police officer and security guard will be positioned every 10 meters in the standing area to respond quickly should overcrowding occur.
Zig-zag walkways will be set up in the waiting area outside main gate to manage large crowds, while emergency passages will be added at seated area, said officials.
The Chinese pyrotechnics team promises an “ever-changing display,” while the UK show takes “the journey of life” as its theme.
A “dreamlike journey” is the aim of the Austrian team, while the Canadians promises “diamonds under moonlight.”
Seated tickets at 260 yuan (US$41) and standing tickets for 70 yuan are available from www.centurypark.com.cn. The website is in Chinese.
The fireworks festival is a highlight of the Shanghai Tourism Festival and has been staged for 15 years. In the past, it has attracted 90,000 spectators.
