Firm 鈥榙umped cement slurry鈥 in river
A Pudong building materials firm is under investigation for allegedly discharging cement waste into a river.
Residents of Sanlin Town’s Linjiang Village reported that a section of Old Sanlin Port River had been contaminated by slurry mixed with cement and mud, allegedly discharged by Shanghai Fusheng Zhegong, a company affiliated to Forchn Holdings Group Co.
Villagers said the slurry had blocked the river’s connection to the nearby water network, and had hindered people from using river water to irrigate fields.
Gu Jie, an official of Sanlin Town’s urban design and construction office, said complaints were received from residents at the beginning of this month. Water samples had been collected for testing.
The environmental protection bureau in Pudong told Shanghai Daily yesterday that water sample tests were still being made.
Fusheng Zhegong told Shanghai TV Station that it had held a waste discharge license issued by the environment authority and staff said the cement discharge was a recent “accident caused by malfunction of the company’s drainage system.”
However, some villagers claimed the company had been discharging “cement-like waste” since July.
Liu Guiping, director of the Pudong New Area water authority, said the river had been rated as heavily polluted before the waste allegations surfaced, and it had been listed on the town’s river cleaning project this year.
