Firm told to hand back cash for dodgy coolant

A COMPANY was ordered yesterday to hand back cash to 10 customers who had bought its engine coolant.

The Shanghai Hulian-Shikong Technique Co claimed in advertisements that its coolant could reduce the heat of a car's engine by 20 degrees Celsius.

Last March, a retailer surnamed Liu from Shandong Province saw the ad and ordered 27,000 yuan (US$3,950) worth of the coolant. Liu, however, soon realized the product was much less effective than the ads claimed.

He also discovered on the Internet that the coolant had caused several car engines to explode.

When Liu tried to contact the company, he found their phone numbers no longer worked and the company had disappeared.

Liu was not the only victim. Nine others also complained after buying the coolant.

The Xuhui District People's Court said the company couldn't prove its product had passed quality tests, and the claims it made in its ads were untrue.

In addition, the product had hidden safety problems, and several passengers had been injured after engines exploded after using the coolant, the court said.

No one from the accused firm appeared before the court. The firm was ordered to reimburse all 10 retailers.
