Fishermen win compensation
THREE local fishermen won a compensation of 300,000 yuan (US$48,900) from three companies after the sewage discharged by the companies polluted the rivers where they were fishing, the Pudong New Area People’s Court announced yesterday.
The two sides reached an agreement during mediation ordered by the court. The three companies agreed to pay the plaintiffs 100,000 yuan each.
According to the court, some 100,000 kilograms of fish died in April, which was blamed on the companies. Local fishermen in Laogang Town filed complaints to the town government. One of the companies offers tank container cleaning service while another transports chemicals.
On April 29, the environmental authority in Pudong measured the level of pollution in waters near the two companies and found it to be excessive pollution discharge.
Although the government later took measures to clean the pollution and some penalty were issued to the two companies, the compensation deal for the three fishermen, who suffered the most losses, could not be settled.
After the three people brought a 570,000 yuan compensation lawsuit to the court, the judges went to the spot many times to do their own investigation.
They found more clues that linked the two companies for the discharge. They also discovered another company in fault for pollution and listed it as the third defendant.
The court also consulted a fishing expert in Pudong before agreeing on the compensation amount for the fishermen.
