Five charged for online game plug-in

FIVE people are being prosecuted for allegedly selling a plug-in program for "Maple Story," a popular online game.

Headed by Zhang Le, the five illegally earned more than 4 million yuan (US$612,557) by selling the software that helps players upgrade experience, equipment and levels in the game by cheating.

It ranks as one of last year's top 10 cases concerning intellectual property protection in the city. The Shanghai Intellectual Property Administration announced the city's top 10 IPR-related cases yesterday.

Police received a report from Shanghai Shanda Group, the game's copyright owner, last September that someone posted and sold the plug-in program on the Internet with the nickname Liangyu Maple Story.

Police started investigating based on the QQ number of the program's salesmen and got key clues about registration information, the IP address and transaction records from Alipay, a popular online transaction platform.

Police then caught the five suspects in Hubei, Guangdong and Jiangsu provinces and confiscated three computers and two servers.
