Flammable liquid pipeline leak

ENGINEERS were last night repairing a pipeline leak in the Pudong New Area carrying highly flammable naphtha.

Emergency services created an 80-meter radius cordon around the leak in the Sinopec Shanghai Gaoqiao Co pipeline, said the local authorities.

Sinopec raised the alarm at 6:30am yesterday when its monitoring system detected the liquid leaking near Dazhihe Bridge and Hangnan Road.

Supplies were shut down to the pipeline from the Sinopec plant at Zhongxin Village in Xuanqiao Town, to another petrochemical company in Jinshan District.

It is used to deliver naphtha — a flammable product from the distillation of petroleum, said the Shanghai Work Safety Administration.

Firefighters and other emergency workers who attended the scene wore anti-static clothes to safeguard against creating any sparks.

There are no residents in the affected area and there were no casualties, said the work safety administration

But one nearby villager said his ducks died yesterday morning after swimming in a river believed to be polluted by naphtha, xinmin.cn reported.

It also reported that the pipe that leaked is old.

The Sinopec Shanghai Gaoqiao Co management could not be reached for comment yesterday.
