Flight passengers jailed, fined for refusing to turn off cell phone, fighting on plane
Two passengers have been detained and fined for refusing to turn off a cellphone and beating another passenger who tried to persuade them to do so on a Shanghai Airlines flight from Macao to Shanghai, police said today.
A 52-year-old passenger surnamed Wang had a quarrel with the flight attendants when he was caught using his mobile phone and refused to turn it off during the airline’s Flight FM818 yesterday, said police. Another male passenger surnamed Liu, 47, who sat behind him, tried to persuade him, but was beaten by Wang and his 26-year-old female companion, surnamed Li.
The flight landed at Hongqiao Airport safely about 3:50pm yesterday afternoon, when Wang and Li were take away by police for investigation. A 12-day detention and a 200-yuan fine were imposed on Wang, while Li was punished with a 10-day detention and fined 500 yuan, police said.
