Flights canceled, delayed due to heavy rains

MORE than 30 flights were canceled and over 100 delayed as bad weather affected air traffic at the city’s two airports yesterday, the Shanghai Airport Authority said.

The air traffic controller issued an orange alert — the second highest of its four-tier alert system — for Shanghai Hongqiao and Pudong airports from 2:40pm because of heavy rains which were accompanied by lightning and thunder.

The Air Traffic Management Bureau had predicted on Tuesday night that takeoff and landing in the city would be affected — virtually by half — because of weather.

Pudong airport was the worst hit with 18 domestic and international flights canceled and 64 others delayed by 6pm yesterday. Moreover, over 20 flights had to be diverted to other airports due to inclement weather.

Lufthansa Flight LH732 from Frankfurt, which was scheduled to arrive at Pudong airport at 2:50pm, was diverted to Hongqiao airport. China Eastern Airlines’ flight MU788 from Rome to Pudong was also diverted to Hongqiao.

Other major airlines like American, China Southern and Shanghai as well as Juneyao and Spring were also affected.

Heavy rains also flooded the underground parking areas — P1 and P2 — at Pudong international airport around 6pm, but the waters were drained out soon, the airport authority said.

Weather forecasters meanwhile predicted that more showers would hit the city today and tomorrow. A heavy rainfall of 50 millimeters per hour will strike some areas early today, accompanied by strong winds and lightning.

More rain is expected next Tuesday and Wednesday as well as next weekend.

The new round of heavy rains will increase the water level at upstream Taihu Lake along with rivers and creeks, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

The mercury rose to 35.3 degrees Celsius in downtown Xujiahui yesterday, making it the second hottest day of the year, the bureau said.
