Flower power
DONGPING Forest Park in Chongming Island will double in size over the next five years.
It is part of the development plan to turn Chongming into a flower island, authorities said.
They plan to apply for the International Horticultural Exhibitions and Chongming will be the venue if the application succeeds.
The park covers more than 333 hectares of land so far, and another 333 hectares will be added in the next five years, according to the Shanghai Morning Post. Details on the expansion have not yet been announced.
The plant structure layout in Chongming will be improved, and protection for wetlands, forests and green areas is to be strengthened, according to the development blueprint. Nearly a quarter of Chongming comprises forest coverage.
In future, there will be flowers for every season, officials say.
The plan also involves creating a paradise for migrant birds on the island. More than 10,000 migrant birds were spotted in Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve recently.
