Food coupons land official in hot water

A SENIOR official in Hongkou District has been “severely reprimanded” for using public funds to pay for food coupons to give to his staff, Shanghai’s disciplinary watchdog said yesterday.

Gong Xiangzhen, director and Party chief of the Hongkou Disease Control and Prevention Center, was found to have spent 40,800 yuan (US$6,650) on coupons, which he distributed to workers in June.

His actions violated the eight-point code of conduct issued by the Party Central Committee in December 2012, which urges officials to be thrifty and avoid all forms of extravagance.

Since the start of the year, the Shanghai watchdog has handled 13 cases of code violations, resulting in punishments for 16 officials. Four of them — a headmaster and three company managers — were removed from their posts.

The violations included the use of public funds to pay for personal travel and to finance a banquet.

In January, the watchdog said that 111 officials in 87 cases have been punished in Shanghai since the introduction of the eight-point code.

A recent crackdown on extravagance caused a slump in sales of luxury moon cakes — a traditional gift among officials during the Mid-Autumn Festival, the watchdog said.
