‘Food poisoning’ incident probed
THE city’s food safety authority is investigating an alleged case of food poisoning involving 45 guests at a wedding banquet at the five-star Waldorf Astoria Shanghai.
The event happened on March 1 and the affected people suffered symptoms like fever, diarrhea and vomiting.
Twelve people, including the bridegroom, required hospital treatment.
The bride and groom said they suspected a dish of Kobe beef and fried mushrooms was to blame, as some of the meat was not fully cooked.
The sale of Kobe beef is illegal in China.
The hotel said it was visited by the local food and drug administration, which took samples of food.
“As the hotel has not received the final results of the tests, we are unable to provide further details. We are working closely with the FDA to reach a conclusion in due course,” it said in a statement.
Meanwhile, officials from Huangpu District market supervision bureau said they received a complaint on March 7 and went to the hotel the following day.
“We took samples of the beef served on the wedding night and another three samples of high risk foods, like seafood, that weren’t serve just to check,” said Chen Jiong from the bureau.
“The results we got last Friday found no pathogenic bacteria in the four samples,” he said.
The bureau will contact with the couple to get the medical records of all the people who were sick, he said.
