Foreign ‘heroin smuggler’ held
A FOREIGN man was put under criminal detention last month on suspicion of trying to smuggle heroin into the country, customs authorities said yesterday.
The suspect, who was not identified, was apprehended on March 19 at Pudong International Airport while allegedly attempting to pass through the nothing-to-declare channel with 689 grams of the narcotic hidden in the soles of his shoes.
He is alleged to have told officials he had been offered US$1,500 to transport the drugs from Pakistan to Guangzhou, capital of south China’s Guangdong Province, and was transiting through Shanghai.
Officials said they had been tracking the suspect for some time, and that the purity of the drug found in his possession was 45.2 percent.
Since the start of the year, customs authorities in Shanghai have seized almost 1.1 kilograms of heroin and 1.15kg of cocaine in three separate smuggling cases.
