Foreigner accused of assault told to stay put
A FOREIGN man who allegedly assaulted a Chinese taxi passenger in downtown Shanghai last week has been told he cannot leave the city until police have completed an investigation into the incident.
The passenger, surnamed Zhang, claimed he was attacked at the intersection of Wuding and Jiangsu roads on June 4 while sitting in the front passenger seat of the cab. He claimed his assailant rode up to the car on a bicycle and began punching him through the open window.
Police identified the foreign man, whose identity has not been revealed, from surveillance camera footage. He claimed Zhang provoked him, police said.
Zhang denied making any gestures or saying anything to provoke the man.
