Foreigners offer rare blood for senior

TEN foreigners with suitable blood types have offered to help an elderly patient, following an appeal in Shanghai Daily.

Zhang Jingdi, aged 87, suffered anemia after surgery last week to remove a tumor from his abdomen and his left kidney. His AB Rh negative blood type is rare among Chinese but more commonly found in Caucasians.

Zhongshan Hospital said Zhang recovered to a close-to-normal blood level yesterday following some transfusions, but his treatment may require more blood supplies.

Foreigners from countries such as Spain and Canada contacted Shanghai Daily, eager to donate blood to help Zhang, a retired teacher and devoted charity volunteer.

Shanghai Daily passed on the offers to Zhang's relatives who said they would contact the volunteers to arrange a donation if required.

"We are deeply touched and so grateful to the volunteers," the patient's son, Zhang Chunyu, said yesterday.

"The hospital and the blood center have promised to try their best to obtain blood for my father. The offers from these volunteers make us feel safe and greatly supported," he said.

Zhang has raised more than 5 million yuan (US$759,128) from expatriates to help the needy over the past 25 years.
