THE former vice president of the state-owned Shanghai Lingang Economic Development Group was sentenced to life imprisonment today for taking bribes in excess of 8.1 million yuan (US$1.28 million), the Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People's Court said this morning.
Dai Weizhong, 49, was the vice president of the Lingang Economic Development Group and the board chairman of Shanghai Lingang Construction and Development Co between 2004 and 2011.
Dai used his position to help Zhu Shuizhong, the head of a construction company, to win many construction projects with a gross contract value of over 300 million yuan, the court said.
In return, Zhu gave Dai more than 8 million yuan in kickbacks in the form of cash, apartments, overseas travels, Apple iPad and Sony laptop, the prosecutors said.
Dai also helped a construction subcontractor to win projects valued at more than 200 million yuan and received US$20,000 in commission to send his son to study abroad, according to the prosecutors.
The court made the verdict with consideration that Dai confessed other bribes that prosecutors did not know. All his ill-gotten money has been confiscated.
