Former director accused of taking bribes
THE former director of the Huangpu District Tourism Administrative Bureau was tried yesterday for allegedly accepting 100,000 yuan (US$14,641) in bribes.
Prosecutors called for Han Jiamin, 56, to be given a minimum sentence of 10 years but his lawyer told Huangpu District People's Court his client was the victim of a false accusation.
Han was the bureau's director from July 2001 to September 2008.
A friend had introduced him to Yin Dan, manager of a Hong Kong public relations company, in late 2003. Yin and the friend, surnamed Wang, hoped Han could offer them advertising business in Shanghai, prosecutors said.
In May and June 2004, Yin allegedly went to Han's office twice and gave him 50,000 yuan each time. After that, the Hong Kong company got a contract to make plans for the Huangpu part of the 2004 Shanghai Tourism Festival, including the opening ceremony, and programs on Nanjing Road and at Yuyuan Garden. Han signed his name on the contract, prosecutors alleged.
Yin reported the bribes to prosecutors last September and Han was detained at Pudong International Airport on September 23 when he was about to leave on a business trip.
Yesterday, Han told the court that he did receive 100,000 yuan from Yin but that the money had been returned.
Han said he gave the money to his wife, surnamed Chen, from whom he was divorced, and entrusted her to return it to Yin. He told the court he didn't think it proper to return the money by himself. But Chen told the court she had never received the money and Han hadn't asked her to return money to anybody.
Han's lawyer said there was a lack of strong evidence and that Yin's accusations were false.
The court didn't announce a verdict in the case yesterday.
