Former director facing court

FORMER Putuo District director Cai Zhiqiang is facing court for allegedly accepting more than 2.8 million yuan (US$410,000) in bribes, prosecutors said yesterday.

Yin Kunneng, former office director of the Putuo District government, is also being prosecuted for allegedly accepting about 700,000 yuan in bribes, they added.

Cai, 46, took advantage of his positions to accept bribes from companies and individuals, according to the Shanghai No. 2 Prosecutors' Office.

Cai was transferred to prosecutors last December after the Shanghai Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China carried out an investigation.

The prosecutors' office were collecting evidence after the discipline watchdog began to investigate Cai and decided to arrest Cai on December 24, according to prosecutors.

Yin's case was also investigated by the discipline watchdog and prosecutors at the same time.

Cai was a deputy to the Shanghai People's Congress and Putuo District People's Congress before the investigation.

Since 1997, he had held various posts including deputy director and acting director of the office of Shanghai Personnel Bureau.
