Former district official admits 3 counts of bribery
A FORMER district official admitted to accepting bribes from three companies worth about 2.6 million yuan (US$417,885) in exchange for helping them get contracts for construction projects.
Sun Liansheng, 53, was director of the development and reform commission of former Nanhui District between April 2002 and April 2007. He was also chairman of Nanhui Urban Construction Investment and Development Co Ltd between 2004 and 2007, the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court heard.
Between 2002 and 2007, Sun was in charge of economic planning and urban development financing for Nanhui, which has since been amalgamated into the Pudong New Area.
Prosecutors said Sun accepted 300,000 yuan from Shanghai Xin'an Curtain Wall Building & Decoration Co Ltd in 2006. Sun helped the company win a project at the former government office center of Nanhui. He also received pre-paid shopping cards worth 100,000 from Xin'an, prosecutors said.
In 2006, Sun helped Shanghai Dongsheng Construction (Group) Co Ltd win three projects - one for Nanhui Medical and Health Care Center, another for the Party School of the district's Communist Party committee and also a project along Nantuan Road. The company's boss gave Sun 2 million yuan when Sun told him he was planning to buy a house, prosecutors said.
Sun also admitted to accepting HK$200,000 (US$25,800) from Shanghai Xingsheng Fire Engineering Co Ltd in 2007. With Sun's help, the company was even able to lower its contract bidding price from 9.45 million yuan to 8.09 million yuan, the court heard.
Prosecutors said he also took 200,000 yuan from Shanghai Changjiang Xincheng Computer System Integration Co Ltd, a charge Sun denied.
He was arrested on August 30 after a tip from an inmate.
No verdict was announced.
