‘Fox Hunt’ bags another fugitive
A LOCAL woman suspected of commercial fraud who fled the country in the 1990s was apprehended recently after flying into Shanghai from Japan, police said yesterday.
The woman, whose maiden name was Zhao, arrived in Shanghai on May 11 to attend a memorial ceremony for her father who died last year.
She was detained as part of operation “Fox Hunt 2015,” an international manhunt for suspects of economic crimes and corruption.
According to police, business owner Zhao fled to Japan to escape charges of cheating a supplier out of 365,000 yuan (US$59,000) in 1994.
While in Japan, she married a man surnamed Asakura and had a son.
Police said they tried but failed to capture her when she returned to China last year for her father’s funeral.
Since the launch of Fox Hunt last month by the Ministry of Public Security, 150 fugitives have been caught both at home and in 32 countries and regions around the world.
