Fragrant bloom’s late arrival
SWEET scented osmanthus is in full bloom in the city, and the fragrance of the sweet-smelling plant should linger for about a week to 10 days, botanical experts said yesterday.
This year’s osmanthus has bloomed later than any year for a decade because high temperatures delayed the flowering, said Wang Yuqin, an expert at the Shanghai Botanical Garden.
The white and pale yellow blooms usually blossom in the city around mid-September, with the National Day holiday usually the latest time they flower.
“Osmanthus is very sensitive to temperature, and the absorption of enough nutrient is also important for its flowering,” Wang said.
The proper temperature for most osmanthus varieties is around 16 to 18 degrees Celsius, said Wang.
This year, the average temperature of the city was above 18 degrees from October 8 to 12, only starting to fall since then.
The last of the blooms also depends on the mercury, experts said. “The flowering of sweet osmanthus usually lasts a week to 10 days, but the current warm temperature is bad news, which could probably speed up the withering of the blooms,” said Yang Qinghua, an expert with Chenshan Botanical Garden.
The late flowering this year will make osmanthus miss its usual second or third blooms, he added.
Meanwhile, overcast to cloudy weather should dominate the city skies for most of this week, with outbreaks of drizzling, Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.
The temperature should remain stable, ranging between 20 and 26 degrees.
Rain is forecast from late Thursday and Saturday under the influence of a trough, and the temperature will drop at the weekend due to a cold front, according to the bureau.
Today should be overcast with drizzle, and the temperature will range between 20 and 24 degrees.
Drizzle is also expected tomorrow, and the mercury should be the same as today.
The highest temperature will climb 2 degrees on Thursday, and with overcast skies and drizzle again the order of the day.
Showers are forecast for Friday and Saturday.
