Fraud man ‘said he was ex-state leader’s nephew’

A MAN has been charged with fraud after allegedly claiming to be the nephew of former state leader Hu Yaobang in order to con a family out of millions of yuan.

The accused, surnamed Hu, has been charged over a swindle in which a family paid 3.6 million yuan (US$586,440) to get bail for detained relatives, Hongkou District prosecutors said.

A victim of the fraud, surnamed Ye, had seen his parents and aunt arrested in connection with a pyramid scheme in June 2012. Ye was told by another aunt’s friend that they could get bail with the assistance of a friend.

This friend was Hu, who claimed to be the nephew of former state leader Hu Yaobang, who died in 1989.

After contacting the “princeling” in July 2013, they met him in Nanjing, in Jiangsu Province, and he promised to help for a price, said prosecutors.

Hu also showed them several pictures of his “sister,” who he claimed was a secretary for state leaders.

The family suspected that they had been duped when they discovered that Hu’s “sister” was in fact a retired interpreter and lawyers hired by Hu told them that he was no “princeling.”

When they confronted Hu, he promised to return their money, but fled a couple of days later.

Police were alerted and Hu was held on Christmas Day last year.
