Fraud suspect detained after 15-year hunt
A SUSPECT in a 15-year-old, multimillion yuan business fraud case was apprehended recently at Pudong International Airport after flying into China from Argentina, Shanghai police said yesterday.
Now an Argentine national, Li Yan is the former owner of the Nongtejia supermarket chain, which closed its doors in 2000 amid allegations it had defrauded its suppliers out of tens of millions of yuan, police said.
An investigation was launched after a wine supplier filed a complaint claiming he was owed 280,000 yuan (US$43,900) by the company.
The prime suspect in the initial enquiry was Nongtejia’s general manager and corporate representative Wu Zhiyu, who is believed to be still at large and living in Argentina.
Police later determined that Li was complicit in the alleged fraud and placed her on their wanted list.
Her arrest at the end of last month made her the 59th suspect to be detained this year under the “Fox Hunt” campaign, which seeks to track down and apprehend Chinese fugitives living overseas.
