Free surgeries for heroes left with scars
A GOVERNMENT-backed foundation has teamed up with a cosmetology hospital to offer free plastic surgeries to courageous people who are left with scars while helping others or fighting criminals.
Traffic assistant Fang Jiang who fought a knife-wielding attacker in People’s Square in April, and Yang Renjie, who stopped thieves from stealing fish from an aquaculture farm in Chongming Island five years ago, will be the first two beneficiaries. Both of them received injuries on their faces and were hailed as heroes for their brave acts.
Only winners of the Justice and Courage Award, an annual prize honoring heroic deeds, can avail of the free program, which goes a long way to help remove the psychological scars.
The privately run Shanghai Tianda Medical Cosmetology Hospital have examined the scars on Fang and Yang and will hold talks with them soon about the treating process, an official from the hospital told Shanghai Daily yesterday.
Fang, who has three deep scars on his forehead and brow ridge, said he was afraid to undergo the surgery.
“It is good to erase the scars from my face since my grandson is going to be born soon,” he said, “But my family and I are also worried about the risks from the surgeries.”
Yang said he hoped the doctors could find some other treatments that would not affect his work. “The 40-centimeter-long scar from my right face to chest has been a nuisance every time I go through security checks. I am asked to show my identity card every time,” he said. His family has already spent about 100,000 yuan (US$16,000) in the past five years to improve his looks.
All the costs will be borne by the hospital and the city’s Fund for Justice And Courage, which runs the program. Hu Sunkang, director of the fund, said that they are urging more hospitals to join them in their effort.
Hu said the city has been allocating 1.5 to 2 million yuan every year since 2002 to award the heroes.
