‘Freezer body’ killer awaits trial verdict
THE trial of a man accused of murdering his wife and storing her body in a freezer for three months began and finished yesterday at Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court.
Zhu Xiaodong, 30, pled guilty to throttling Yang Liping, 30, at their home in Hongkou District. But he retracted a previous confession about when the killing took place.
Evidence of a money transfer record showed a sum of nearly 45,000 yuan (US$6,820) was transferred from Yang’s Alipay account to Zhu’s account at 10:25am on October 17, 2016.
Zhu had earlier told police he had killed Yang at 7am on October 18, 2016.
“I used her mobile phone to make the money transfer after her death,” Zhu told the court.
Zhu said he and Yang had traveled to Hangzhou on October 15, 2016, but Yang wasn’t satisfied with the hotel and train arrangements.
“She kept making complaints. I told her not to mention it, but she still blamed me when we returned home,” Zhu said. “I couldn’t stand it, and I grabbed her by the throat, asking her to stop. After five minutes, I found that she was not breathing.”
He said he took out a new duvet cover, and squeezed her body into it. Then, he put her in the freezer, which was bought on September 22, 2016, to store frozen food as the couple’s fridge was filled with rats used to feed his pet snakes and lizards, he said.
“After her death, I was torn between committing suicide and surrendering to police.
“I made an unforgivable mistake in 2016. I failed my wife and our parents. If I could choose, I would like to exchange my life for hers. I am so sorry. I’m clear that I can do nothing to amend the harm to her parents. I hope to receive my due punishment as soon as possible to comfort my dead wife,” Zhu said in court.
Prosecutors said that for three months after killing his wife, Zhu lived a normal life.
To cover up her death, he impersonated Yang and pretended she was still alive via SMS and WeChat messages, prosecutors said.
Zhu confessed that he had used her credit card and squandered more than 100,000 yuan on shopping and travel.
The court hasn’t yet issued a verdict.
