Fugitives find it difficult to escape the new portable identity devices
A PORTABLE identity device, being used by Metro police, has helped in nabbing 32 wanted people since July, authorities said on Tuesday.
With the portable devices, officers can check passengers’ identity card within 30 seconds, making it difficult for those on the run to escape from the law for a long time. Those who do not have identity cards can provide their ID number.
On Monday, officers stopped a suspicious looking man at a Metro station. After checking his identity, police discovered he was wanted for stealing a drunk passersby’s belongings on Huashan Road last month.
Another fugitive, wanted for causing trouble, was caught on Shanghai South Railway Station of Metro Line 1 on Tuesday morning.
The police said they will carry out intensive security inspections at Metro stations. Commuters will have to walk through a metal detector and their identifications checked by police against the system via portable devices. Foreign passengers can register their passport number with the officers during inspections.
