Full refunds for quake passengers

TO ensure the safety of their customers, more airlines have announced that they will give full refunds or free flight changes to passengers who had planned to fly from China to Fukuoka and its neighboring areas in Japan, after two strong earthquakes rocked Kyushu, killing 41 people.

Major domestic carriers, including China Eastern Airlines, Spring Airlines and Juneyao Airlines, have joined China Southern Airlines and Air China in making the offer, which passengers can take advantage of until April 30. China Southern Airlines has set April 22 as its deadline.

Meanwhile, major online travel agencies Ctrip, Tuniu, Tongcheng and Shanghai Spring International Travel Service Co immediately contacted their customers in Fukuoka to make sure they were safe.

Ctrip has suspended group tours to Kyushu for safety reasons, issued a warning to tourists, and told its tour guides to cancel visits to areas including Kumamoto Prefecture, where a 7.3-magnitude earthquake hit early on Saturday following a 6.5-magnitude quake.

Tuniu said tourists planning to visit Kyushu should be cautious, adding that it would compensate customers for cancellations.

Ctrip and Tuniu’s free cancelation policy also applies to hotel bookings in Kumamoto between April 16 and April 22.

Tongcheng and Spring International Travel Service Co will give a full refund to those who made bookings for trips between April 22 and April 30.

Ctrip has about 200 customers in Kyushu and Tuniu has 434.

Tuniu has 866 customers scheduled to visit Kyushu.
