Fund helps grieving moms get pregnant
A Shanghai IT executive has established a charitable fund to help parents who have lost their only child undergo free in-vitro fertilization.
Five couples aged between 40 and 50 years old in Jiading District will receive fertility assistance at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital of Fudan University with financial help from the Shanghai “Xinshouxiangqian” (meaning hearts together and hand-in-hand in Chinese) Fund. All of them want to have a child, but are hindered by factors such as age and lack of money.
“People who lose their only child are the group who need help the most,” said 42-year-old Fang Ling, chairman of Shanghai Yaowei Group, who established the fund.
“They are psychologically fragile, and they don’t have their children to be there for them when they are sick,” she said.
Fang herself resorted to in-vitro fertilization when she was 40 years old and became pregnant after four failed attempts.
The experience prompted her to look at ways to help other people.
“I was eager to have a child, so I can understand the loneliness of these families,” Fang said. “Many of them in their 40s and 50s want to have a child, but age and lack of money are obstacles.”
Couples aged between 40 and 50 years old can apply for funding, and health and family planning officials will assess their eligibility.
After a free physical examination and psychological counselling provided by the hospital, they will receive two test-tube baby surgeries, each costing over 40,000 yuan (US$6,451).
The fund plans to expand its assistance to families in all districts in the future, Fang said.
The initial fund offered by Fang’s company is 2 million yuan.
There are more than 1 million families in China who have lost their only child.
