Fund set up to ensure festive cheer for needy
SIX governmental organizations have set up a 100.6 million yuan (US$15.6 million) fund to support seniors and needy people as the end of the year draws closer and the Spring Festival just over a month away.
The Shanghai Charity Foundation’s “Greatest Love Under Blue Sky” will send gifts and offer monetary support to almost 100,000 people in need like the elderly, physically challenged people and low-income families.
About 300 charity events and programs will be held in the city that will raise donations, hold charity bazaars and socializing for needy people over the next 35 days.
The Charity Foundation is pooling in with 78.5 million yuan, with Shanghai Senior Citizens Foundation, the Shanghai Branch of the Red Cross Society of China and Shanghai Foundation for Disabled Persons putting in 12.4 million yuan, 5 million yuan and 1.7 million yuan respectively.
The charity month will end with a one-day money-raising campaign when thousands of volunteers will reach out to people for donations on the streets. A few districts like Huangpu, Xuhui and Qingpu have already set the date of the campaign — January 23 next year.
From Saturday, people can donate on specific programs of the Shanghai Charity Foundation on its official WeChat account “scforg.” The foundation said it had raised 211 million yuan in cash and objects worth 2.4 million yuan last year.
