Gambler ‘stole gold chains’
A TEENAGER addicted to gambling has been charged with robbing a jewelry store to pay his debts, prosecutors in Jiading District said yesterday.
A vendor who bought a gold chain from the 18-year-old suspect has been charged with handling stolen goods.
The teenager, surnamed Li, arrived in Shanghai with 120,000 yuan (US$ 19,200), said prosecutors.
He is said to have blown the cash on lavish entertaining and online gambling.
On November 11, he went to a jewelry store in Jiading District and fled with two chains worth 50,000 yuan while the assistant was distracted.
Li sold one to a gold dealer for 17,000 yuan and used the money to pay some of his debts, said prosecutors.
He was held hours later on his way to an entertainment venue where he worked.
