Gambler who tried to commit suicide jailed
A GAMBLER, who tried to commit suicide by setting his flat on fire, was sentenced to one year in jail for arson by the Zhabei District People’s Court yesterday.
The man, surnamed Tian, was a former security guard at a department store, and incurred heavy debts due to gambling. On May 15, he tried to withdraw cash from his credit card but failed. He contemplated taking his own life and slashed his wrist with a kitchen knife. After failing in his attempt, he set fire to his room by lighting the curtain. As the fire spread he panicked and fled his apartment.
Some of the neighbors flats were damaged in the fire.
Tian, 33, surrendered to the police the same day. The court took a lenient view following his surrender and gave him a lighter sentence.
Under Chinese law, a person who deliberately sets fire that does not lead to severe damage or injuries can face a prison term ranging between three to 10 years. In the event of a death or extensive damage, they can be sentenced to over 10 years in jail, or could face life imprisonment or even death penalty.
