Gang go to jail for selling personal data
NINE gang members were sentenced today to jail terms from six months with probation to two years for selling stolen private information of other people.
It is the largest case of its kind ever handled by Shanghai courts, judges said.
Besides, one member was exempted from criminal punishment.
The gang bought citizens' private information on the Internet or obtained such information by posting false employment ads online. They then sold the information to gain profits.
The gang leader said he had earned 1 million yuan (US$147,600) from this illegal business since 2005.
